Self-esteem refers to how much you value yourself, or in other words, how good you feel about yourself. Each one of us has self-esteem, and having a good self-esteem is important as it influences our lives, for example; making good choices, having good relationships and helping us to deal with difficult situations.
If you have a low self-esteem, you may feel negative about yourself. This is where you may be sensitive to criticism, hostile, and think that you aren’t good enough.

1. CHANGE BAD THOUGHTS ABOUT YOURSELF
If you are having bad thoughts about yourself e.g. ‘I’m not clever’ or ‘I’m not good enough’, replace these thoughts with good ones like ‘I am clever’ or ‘I am good enough’.
2. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
By eating healthy foods and exercising regularly, this will make your body feel good. If your body feels good, then you will have a better mood which can help make your self-esteem better.
3. TAKE TIME TO RELAX
If you are stressed, this can lead to a bad self-esteem. By reducing your stress, this can make your self-esteem better. Find out what reduces your stress. This may be through gaming, having a bath, taking a walk, or something else you like to do.
4. SET GOALS FOR YOURSELF
Think about what you want to achieve e.g. passing your GCSEs, getting a job, etc. Keep regular track of your progress in achieving these goals. By doing this, you will feel accomplished and this could improve your self-esteem.
5. HELP SOMEONE WHO NEEDS IT
This could be someone in your class who is struggling with work. By helping someone, this can make your confidence and self-esteem better.

If you tend to think negatively about something in particular; this could be making friends and socialising – try to change these thoughts. Think about these situations in ways such as ‘If I make a new friend, they might have the same hobbies as me like gaming, and we can help each other to be better gamers’.

As said above, trying new things is important. If we stick to doing the same things, we will not experience anything new, and we become too comfortable. By trying new things, you can build your confidence and self-esteem.

If you hang around with people who make you feel bad, this can reduce your self-esteem. By being around people who make you feel good, this can help you to be more confident and improve your self-esteem.

Accepting yourself means being comfortable with the things you don’t like about yourself. You can do this by accepting compliments rather than rejecting them.
