THE PROBLEM WITH TROLLING – EASY READ VERSION

WHAT IS TROLLING?

‘Trolling’ in an online game is where other people playing the game annoy other players and upset them. Trolling can be in the form of just a few jokes or telling others how bad they are, repeatedly. Although trolling can be seen as a joke, it can negatively impact the person who is getting trolled.

WHY IS TROLLING A PROBLEM?

When trolling is happening, people can be quick to dismiss it with phrases like ‘trolling is just a joke’ or ‘it’s only a little bit of fun’. This is bad because trolling can really harm people, and by trying to make it out to be a joke will not stop it from happening.

IF YOU ARE TROLLING OTHERS, HAVE A READ OF THIS:

If you are trolling others and making them angry, you may find this funny. However, it is not fun to be the person receiving the trolling, and you wouldn’t like someone to do it to you. It can seriously affect people.

Trolling can have deeper impacts than you think. For example, it can lead to a loss of sleep and paranoia.

WHAT ARE GAMES DOING TO COMBAT TROLLING?

Alongside timeouts and banning servers, developers are also doing other things to stop trolling. A good example of this is Blizzard – Blizzard are the creators of the popular online shooter game, Overwatch. When common trolling phases are used such as ‘GG EZ’, the text will automatically be turned into a random phrase by Blizzard. Here are some of the phrases that the trolling can be turned into:

“Well played. I salute you all.”

“Gee whiz! That was fun. Good playing!”

“It’s past my bedtime. Please don’t tell my mommy.”

“I’m wrestling with some insecurity issues in my life but thank you all for playing with me.”

Also, in the hardcore modes of Call Of Duty, players who team kill are kicked off the game.

Although there are many systems put in place to stop trolling by developers, trolling is still a really big issue. Games are still being ruined by the people who troll, and we all have to do things to help stop it. We can do this by making sure that our chats in online games are always positive.
